My name is Jo Clinch. I am an accredited psychotherapist in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and a qualified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapist. 

I am in my forties. I live in Nottingham with my family.


I have significant experience of working in the field of mental health, spanning almost twenty years. I have worked in a wide range of settings including residential, for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities early in my career. I trained in social work, specialising in mental health and have worked in high security settings as well as community based services. More recently I have experience of working in two third sector providers (charities).

What is mental health?

We all know we need to look after our bodies and eat well to maintain our physical health, but do we value our mental health equally? This relates to how we feel about and view ourselves, our place in the world and our relationships. My take on mental health is that we all experience mental distress at some point in our lives. This can be related to bereavement, relationship breakdown, parenting difficulties, work pressures, early life experiences, a traumatic event or a combination of issues. We often try to manage these difficulties ourselves, sometimes relying on everyday crutches to get us through such as alcohol, over working, prescriptive drugs or entering new relationships. We also slip into denial in order to manage our lives. However, these coping strategies tend to only offer short-term relief. There comes a time when these methods are no longer working for us and we may make the decision to talk it through with an impartial person - this is where I come in.
